Trader Joe's, Green Giant and Signature Farms packaged retired vegetables due to the risk of Listeria

Trader Joe's, Green Giant and Signature Farms packaged retired vegetables due to the risk of Listeria

According to the Food and Drug Administration, some packages of pumpkin, cauliflower, zucchini, and vegetable bowls have been removed and sold under the Green Giant, Trader Joe's and Signature Farms brands.

The plant products were voluntarily withdrawn by the Growers Express manufacturer due to concerns about possible contamination with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, the FDA said in a statement Monday.
The packaged vegetables were produced in a factory in Biddeford, Maine, and were distributed in grocery stores in the United States, mainly in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Maine. The FDA issued a list of affected stores and states.
Most potentially contaminated products have "Best if used for" dates between June 26 and 29, 2019. Frozen or canned Green Giant vegetables are not removed.
"Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems," the FDA said.
Other short-term symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the FDA. Listeria infections can cause pregnant women to have miscarriages and stillbirths.
If you think your vegetables could be recalled, or if you can not read the date of your packaged vegetables, the FDA recommends that you do not consume them and dispose of the packages.

Most potentially contaminated products have "Best if used for" dates between June 26 and 29.
"The safety of our consumers is our first priority," said Tom Byrne, president of Growers Express in a statement.
"We self-reported the need for this recall to the US Food and Drug Administration and stopped production immediately after the Massachusetts Department of Health notified us of a single positive sample."
Growers Express issued a complete list of recalled products. It includes:

Growers Express said it is disinfecting the factory and the equipment involved and that it is conducting additional safety tests. No other Growers Express product was involved in the recall.
