People across the United States take days to honor their mothers.

It is Mother's Day in the United States!

This day was first observed in the United States in 1907 by Anna M. Was in a religious service conducted by Jarvis. Jarvis was a Philadelphia school teacher who wanted one day to honor her mother.

During that ceremony, Anna presented her mother's favorite flower: white carnations. The flowers represent sweetness, purity and patience.

Anna continued to help prominent legislators and businessmen in hopes of making Mother's Day a national holiday. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson announced that his efforts had paid off, the second Sunday in May would be Mother's Day.
