The city's police department said in a statement that a 19-year-old man died after being shot in a crowd of protesters in Detroit on Friday night.

Police said a gray hoax was shot in Durango by an unknown suspect. The victim later died in hospital.

Detroit is one of several cities in the United States that saw controversial protests Saturday night over the death of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis police custody. The police made dozens of arrests overnight.

Detroit police cannot confirm whether the victim was part of the protests, but the shooting occurred in the city center where the protests were taking place. The Detroit Police is investigating.

Earlier, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said a man was arrested after trying to run over an officer. A command officer was hit by a stone thrown by a guard and taken to the hospital.

Many of those arrested are not residents of the city of Detroit, Craig said.

Craig said, "I'm not going to wait and let a small minority, criminals, come here, attack our officers and make us insecure. I know we won't tolerate this."
