Republican Senator Mitt Romney on Saturday condemned President Donald Trump's neglect of officials in internal government, calling it a "threat to responsible democracy".

Romney's remarks came in response to Trump's firing of State Department Inspector General Steve Linnick on Friday, the latest in a series of vigilant speeches of independent government after the president was acquitted of two articles. Impeachment earlier this year.

The Utah Republican tweeted, "The layoff of many inspector generals is unprecedented. Doing so without good motives is essential to freedom. It is a threat to responsible democracy and a flaw in the balance of constitutional power."

Romney is the only Republican in the Senate who earlier this year condemned Trump for abuse of power.

Linnick's firing immediately condemned top Democrats, who accused the president of indulging in a pattern of retaliation against public servants, accusing them of monitoring his administration.
